Introducing the Aer x Carryology Tokai Backpack

From the densely fogged alleys, there’s cold silence in the sleeping metropolis… save for the neon signs buzzing overhead, painting the puddles below with a saturated glow. From the mist, a low rumble trembles through the steel and glass. The Tokai returns.

(Overly-dramatic introduction, I know, but let’s have some fun, right?)

One of the biggest and best collaboration launches we’ve ever had, with one of the Carry Community’s favorite brands, comes back for a sequel.

We’re proud to announce the Aer x Carryology Tokai Backpack.

Soaring Again with Aer

Our friends Aer probably don’t need any introduction, but we’re going to give them one anyway. Based in San Francisco, they stormed onto the scene with their Aer Fit Pack, and never left, delivering a brand that does it all: style, minimalism, versatility, utility, and affordability all in one complete package.

They’re leaders in the industry, and no stranger to the annual Carry Awards, racking up an unprecedented three 1st place titles. That’s no easy task.

And for all these reasons above, we were stoked when Aer hit us up back in 2019 with interest in doing a collab project. Later, we launched the Tokai Sling, a nod to Japanese streetwear: “Tokai” is Japanese (都会) for “urban” or “city”.

It sold out in just over a minute. For many, the Tokai Sling, inspired by the City Sling, is one of their favorite sling designs out there, and a grail piece for our hardcore carry collectors.

So after the dust settled, we decided to go round again, to develop a sidekick for the Tokai Sling – a backpack inspired by streetwear, and a complementing piece for everyday adventures.

The Foundation

After the launch of the Tokai Sling in 2020, Allen Choi reached out with a new pack he’d designed, the Aer City Pack, and we got our hands on some production units before they launched.

Just like the City Sling, it was compact, perfectly designed for city essentials, and had an ultra-clean exterior – and with its contoured back panel designed to curve with your shoulders, its on-body comfort was top-tier.

After months of testing the City Pack, we knew it was one of the best compact daypacks in the industry – and the perfect partner to the Tokai.

City Pack’s Greatest Hits

• Padded, suspended laptop pocket with soft lining (fits up to 16″ laptop)

• Quick-access top pocket with soft lining

• Smart organization for your everyday essentials

• Contoured back panel for enhanced comfort and excellent fit

• Exterior water bottle pocket

• Smart tracker pocket designed for AirTags or Tile trackers

• Padded, quick-grab side handle for versatile carrying

• Luggage handle pass-through

Keeping It Tokai

First up, color. With the same philosophy as the Tokai Sling – a balance of loud/quiet, calm/rush, black/white, rugged/elegant, patterns/solids, and, of course, yin/yang.

It would be inspired by all of these, and give a nod to the flair and expression of Japanese streetwear. A culture that continues to inspire us here at Carryology HQ.

We opted to put an all-black front face on the backpack, with MultiCam Black wrapped around the top, bottom, sides, and back. Onlookers see stealth black from the back, until the pack angles for that camo pop.

High-Vis Interior

Of course, our signature feature, a high-vis interior in bright orange is throughout the main “3/4 clamshell” compartment. This is made from a custom water-resistant nylon ripstop fabric that’s bluesign® approved.

Inverted Camo

Playing with the yin/yang concept like we did with the sling, the front lower accessory pocket and the admin accessory compartment are the panels that we flipped vice versa, lined with MultiCam Alpine (X50) or MCB (X50). A playful nod, hidden away, but enjoyable for the user when accessing your gear on the go.

Containing the pattern, we selected waterproof Dimension Polyant X-Pac, in two fabrics, White in X42, and Black in X50.

A fan favorite, X50 and X42 is brutal stuff. The front faces are made from Cordura’s 500D and 420D nylon, commonly used on military packs and gear. On that face, there’s a DWR (durable water repellent) coating, to create those sexy water beads. Then, it’s sandwiched via Dimension Polyant’s proprietary lamination process with a mid-layer of black post-consumer recycled polyester, an X-PLY® at 22° for strength and anti-stretch, and finally a 0.5 mil shiny polyester film on the back face.

Weatherproof

To keep all these waterproof X-Pac panels closed up tight and keep out the weather, we opted for YKK’s AquaGuard zippers. The three main compartments all use a chunky matte-finish #8 zipper coil for durability. The top accessory pocket uses a svelte #6 zipper to keep things tidy.

Allen and Andy also told us about their new zipper pullers, which we were totally on board with incorporating into the collab. An Aer-debossed cylindrical plastic puller at the end for grip, all woven through mini YKK metal zipper pullers via orange nylon cording, a pleasure to use. Most importantly, they’re much quieter than the previous designs.

Magnets Are Key

We decided to pimp out the key lanyard, with a Korean-made magnetic “Magic Short” key lanyard with a metal keyring. Stronger, more functional, and a little more badass.

The sternum strap also utilizes magnetic hardware, making it easy to pop open and shut with one hand. We kept branding minimal, so the Aer and Carryology logos are debossed into the hardware itself, black on black. Gloss into matte.

Hypalon Hits

If you’ve been following what we do, you know we love the technical goodness and weatherability of Hypalon (the stuff used in Navy SEAL inflatable boats). Its matte black looks would work in tandem with the black X50 for a super-clean face, and give some variation to the handfeel. And while we were at it, we added a zipper garage in Hypalon too, for that extra notch of weatherproofness.

Bag It Up

And the last finishing touch – each Tokai Pack comes with a black ripstop nylon dust drawstring bag with orange cord for shipping and/or storage. We’ve added gloss black Aer and Carryology logos to the exterior of the bag, keeping it subtle and classy. Use it for a laundry travel bag, for dirty boot storage inside your pack, as an emergency bag in the car door pocket, or whatever you can dream up.

EDC is the first piece of the puzzle when it comes to carrying well. There are a plethora of options out there, and you might have spent years dialing in your carry. Perhaps you’ve got it down to a fine art; however, there’s always something worth looking into. You can always Carry Better! These options are simple upgrades to make your EDC kit shine.

Field Notes (from US$9.95)

Field Notes

An EDC notebook will tackle everything from to-do lists to meeting notes and on-the-fly inspiration. And Field Notes are undeniable icons in the notebook niche. The brand was inspired by agricultural promotional memo books given to farmers and has tended its own offerings with care, now providing a wide range of covers, paper styles, sizes, and even activity-specific options too (such as their D&D gaming journals). The notebooks are great for sticking in a back pocket or slipping in a bag, and even in a digital world, it’s hard to beat the simple efficiency and flexibility of a Field Notes notebook.

Koch Tools (from US$20)

Koch Tools

If you’ve been in the EDC scene for a while, the chances are high that you’ve heard of Koch Tools. But if you’re just getting started, welcome to a varied and enticing selection of functional and eye-catching EDC tools that will bring colorful character to your setup. Pieces range from carabiners and beads to knives, prybars, keychain multitools, and more. So whatever you’re into, you’ll likely find tempting pieces to add functional flair to your daily gear.

Be it the admin organization and drawbridge-style opening of the A02-C – a pouch fit for the inside or outside of your pack for quick essentials access – to the cyclinder-like awesomeness of the AP-C, a pouch that can do double duty, daily or outdoors, for the longer tools in your arsenal.

And if you’re the kind if EDCer who digs having their phone off-body but close-at-hand, check out the SPX-C for a solution that fits most of today’s smartphones. And with the above donning VX25, Aquaguard zippers, and three of the four lined with Dimension Polyant PX05, you have one ready-to-go-anywhere collection.

The James Brand Cache River Bit Driver (US$60)

The James Brand Cache River Bit Driver

Carrying a toolbox around every day is a bit of a hassle. But having a functional bit driver for those just-in-case scenarios is well worth considering adding to your lineup. And if you’re looking for compact durability with clever and practical design, the James Brand Cache River is a solid pick. Made with lightweight anodized aluminum, it’s small enough to fit in a pocket but packs in handy features such as a magnetic bit attachment point, a ball bearing pivot, and interior storage for two additional bits.

You’ll find a choice of useful pockets across both designs, along with inbuilt 3D patterning volume for ease of storage. And with their tough builds, there’s no reason these pouches can’t withstand travel duty too.

Fisher Astronaut Space Pen (US$79)

Fisher Astronaut Space Pen

The Fisher Space Pen is an EDC icon in its own right and this version salutes it accordingly, featuring the original Astronaut Space Pen design used on the 1968 Apollo 7 space mission. The pen is made in the USA and features a solid brass construction with a chrome-plated finish. It comes with a Fisher Pressurized PR4 cartridge and is capable of writing pretty much anywhere – upside down, underwater, over grease, and in temperature extremes. Backed by a lifetime guarantee, you can trust this pen will keep going strong whatever mission the day has in store.

A reissue of the original 1979 Q diver-inspired watch, it features a Seiko quartz movement, a stainless steel case and strap, and INDIGLO® lume for visibility in the dark. And while you won’t be deep sea diving with this watch, its respectable 50-meter water resistance will easily keep the elements at bay during daily wear.

In the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, a former firefighter by the name of Martin Kubes sews up some of the cleanest work you’ll ever see in the world of EDC softgoods. Martin’s social feeds are a pleasure to scroll through every day, with work-in-progress bags and accessories, each one tailored to its future owner’s needs. Most of our readers have probably seen his work in this fashion, but many fewer have had the pleasure of experiencing the bags themselves. Martin is a one-man shop, and it’s so very clear that he takes great pride in his craft, so wait times for backpacks often float around 20 weeks or more.

However, if you’re lucky enough to get in line, and patient enough to wait, you’ll have a REHOSE work of art that you can call your own. When Martin gave me that opportunity, we both decided on his classic FLASH Flip and the newer BUDDY 22. Over the past few months I’ve been using these for daily outings, hikes, and lengthy trips. They’ve easily become some of my most used packs this year, so let me tell you why.

FLASH Flip

Medium to large EDC and travel backpack with intuitive access points and sharp design elements

In the timeline of REHOSE, the FLASH Flip could be considered one of the OGs; an iteration of the even older FLASH model. This most recent FLASH Flip brings about some updates to the previous design, such as ultra-clean stretch bottle pockets and a padded boot. This is the bag to strive for if you often catch yourself in a bit of rain or if you often need to adjust the amount of gear you’re carrying throughout the day, thanks to the adjustable flap.

REHOSE FLASH Flip

The FLASH Flip is part roll-top, part top-loader, and part panel-loader. In practice, this means you have three ways for loading and accessing. The most obvious is annotated by the hefty AustriAlpin Cobra buckle; the front flap. Unclasping the buckle gives you top-load access to the entire volume of the bag at a listed 25L. I found the capacity was probably closer to other common 28L bags. The handle at the mouth of the flap gives an easy grab point to hold the bag while you stuff your gear in, but it also allows you to rip down the front panel, similar to the Mystery Ranch Spartan, giving you full-frontal access to the compartment. This is the way to go while packing your bag up, but you may want to avoid it while out and about so your gear isn’t at risk of tumbling out. For me, the easiest way to quickly access my gear was to keep the panel unzipped just until the fold in the flap. Your gear stays just as secure but it allows simple side access into the main compartment to grab a shell or insulation layer.

REHOSE FLASH Flip

The pocketing on the FLASH Flip is smartly designed around access to the main compartment. For smaller gear, your best bet is to utilize the side-access front pocket; great for a snack or small first aid kit. The interior is lined with pockets on all sides except the back, which has a row of PALS for the optional laptop sleeve or other accessories. On either side are open-top wand pockets which are most readily accessible via the top opening. The top of the front panel is home to a zippered pocket with some built-in volume. This is a great spot for more secure gear, while still being easily accessible just under the front flap. Further down the front panel is a mesh pocket for other smaller bits you don’t want floating to the bottom of your bag.

REHOSE FLASH Flip

Besides some hardware differences, both the FLASH Flip and BUDDY series share a harness, which is one of the highlights of Martin’s work. More on that below as we dig into the more compact BUDDY 22.

REHOSE FLASH Flip

BUDDY 22

Midsize do-all backpack with pleasingly simple access points and a sleek exterior

REHOSE BUDDY 22

The BUDDY 22 is an evolution of an older top-loader, the BARREL, and comes in both the pictured 22L size and a 30L size which is more oriented for one-bag travel or those with heftier daily carry requirements. For me, the BUDDY 22 has been the surprise hit of the year. This is the everyday backpack from REHOSE as of this writing. Everything about it makes it easier to go about your day with all of your gear protected and in its place, all while looking absolutely slick.

REHOSE BUDDY 22

The smooth-as-butter horseshoe zip allows you to pack and access the contents of the main compartment in three separate ways, just like the FLASH Flip; side access on either side, top-loader access, and full panel access. While the means of access are fundamentally different from its sibling, it still checks many of the same boxes depending on your preferences. With the FLASH Flip, I found the easiest mode of ingress and egress was via the side zips, meaning I’d pack my most used items near the bottom. However, with the BUDDY 22 I found the opposite to be true. While side access is still intuitive, I tended to pack things like my camera at the very top of the bag, treating it like a top-loader. The row of PALS at the top of the back wall meant I could easily mount a camera cube or any other bits of gear so it was immediately accessible. The horseshoe zipper makes opening the top flap incredibly easy, and you can accomplish it with one hand after some practice. Just like with the FLASH Flip, utilizing the entire front panel zip is the best way to load up your gear before heading out on your adventure.

BUDDY 22
BUDDY 22

One of the most welcome additions to the BUDDY line of bags is the top quick-access pocket. Just enough room for your keys, wallet, earbuds, and maybe a snack. Since it sits right behind your head, you can even access it while wearing the bag if you’re even the littlest bit flexible. One of the cooler things about this bag is that all of the pull-tabs are 550 paracord (color chosen by you), and the way they’re attached to the bag allows them to be used for a little peace of mind by running the zipper pull through them. This is true of both this quick-access pocket as well as the main compartment.

BUDDY 22
REHOSE BUDDY 22

Besides a vertical slash pocket on the front panel, the rest of the bag is compact with nothing to get caught on as you make your way through urban environments or other crowded areas, which is where it really thrives.

BUDDY 22

I’m not big on micro-organization in bags. I don’t need pen slots or anything of the sort; I bring my own pouches. And for those who follow in these footsteps, the BUDDY 22 is the king of macro-organization. There’s pocketing aplenty and each zippered or open-top pocket is perfectly in its place. When you pop open the lid, there’s a gusseted side-access mesh pocket that lives right below the top quick-access pocket. Thanks to the gusseted design, it can hold a surprising amount, but I’d keep heavier items elsewhere.

BUDDY 22

Once you’ve gotten a look down the barrel, the BUDDY presents you with several intuitive places to stow your gear. On either side near the top are angled, zippered slash pockets. I used these as extended quick-access pockets for things like my power bank, Peak Design Mobile Tripod, or a small gear pouch. Below the pocket-adorned lid is a wall of loop. Martin ships these bags with a small hook-backed pen and tool panel, but as I alluded to above, that isn’t my jam, so I opted for a blacked-out Carryology P13 Signal patch. Below that, still on the front panel of the bag, is a larger, gusseted mesh pocket. The wand pockets from the FLASH series also make a return here, and since the BUDDY typically does not come with exterior bottle pockets, this is where I stowed my water bottle of choice, a Slim memobottle. These won’t fit a larger Nalgene-style bottle, but I was able to easily stow my Peak Design Travel Tripod in the opposing wand pocket.

BUDDY 22

The harness, which is shared between both bags, is hyper-comfortable thanks to the wide, dense straps, and is utilitarian enough to commute through the urban jungle or an actual jungle. The load-lifters are easy to grab, adjust, and stow, without getting in the way. Honestly, this is one of the only harnesses that I don’t mind load-lifters on, as I usually prefer them left off in the name of simplicity. REHOSE has designed one of my favorite harnesses for EDC to date.

REHOSE BUDDY 22
REHOSE BUDDY 22

It’s difficult to write anything other than high praise for the REHOSE family of bags and the work that Martin puts into them. The wait list is long because, as you’ll hear from Martin himself, details matter. That mantra shines through in every custom, made-to-order item that leaves his shop. Bags like these could only come from someone who is truly passionate about their craft, and when you see them first-hand, you’ll redefine your own sense of what a high-quality bag is.

REHOSE BUDDY 22

I’ve truly fallen in love with REHOSE, and I hope it’s easy to see why. My BUDDY 22 has been everything from an office bag and one-bag travel bag, to something I’ve hauled diapers and bottles in. When you decide to take the plunge, be sure to peruse the REHOSE social accounts for some inspiration, where Martin documents almost every bag he makes. The variations of colors and sets of features are truly unique to each of their owners, and each is worthy of the incredibly high standard of the REHOSE name.

We partnered with EDC and outdoor legend, Patrick Ma’s (great interview here) Prometheus Design Werx, to bring four new pieces to our Carryology Essentials program.

Introducing the Prometheus Design Werx x Carryology:

SPX Pouch (SPX-C / CE07)

Accessory Pod (AP-C / CE08)

Stash Pouch Size 1 (SP1-C / CE09)

Admin Organizer Size 2 (AO2-C / CE10)

HAL1 Straps Sold Separately

Iconic, functional, and hard-wearing EDC pouches from the masters at PDW, then elevated with materials and trims to protect your gear against the elements. A modular pouch system to incorporate into your existing carry quiver, no matter what you carry or whatever your mission.

Each CE release is carefully chosen because it’s “best in class”. The leading pieces of gear in essential categories, hand-picked and taken to the design table and reimagined.

In this case, we have the modular pouch/organizer collection. Four industry-leading pieces with years of insights built in, paired with sleek and minimal lines and our signature touch of expression and performance.

And if you didn’t already know, these CE collections are designed to be restocked and evergreen, so more folks can access them and carry them proudly. So if this sells out make sure to hit that ‘NOTIFY ME’ button.

The Pouch Series

SPX-C

The SPX Pouch is designed to hold most of today’s smartphones and features an extra internal divider to stash a power bank so you can charge on the fly.

It’s the perfect pouch to access your smartphone while on the go without the annoyance of it being a weight banging around in your pant or short pocket when hiking, climbing, or during any active pursuit.

AP-C

The AP-C is the classic pen and pencil case. A version longer than most linear-style zippered pouches and ideally suited for full-sized combo wrenches, art supplies, and any manner of writing and drawing implements. And it will even fit most popular brands of modern electric toothbrushes.

SP1-C

The SP1-C is designed to store a wide variety of items from the trail to EDC. Not too big and not too small, this handy zippered pouch is ideal for anything from binoculars to personal effects, trail snacks, and survival items.

AO2-C

The AO2-C is a true box construction, “drawbridge” type, clamshell opening organizer designed primarily to house writing to admin implements and compact tools.

The Upgrades

Rugged Exterior Fabric

You know us, we’re huge fans of the Connecticut-based brand Dimension Polyant’s X-Pac fabric. Being completely honest, we explored some additional fabrics during the development phases, but then we circled back to X-Pac. And why’s that? Firstly, it’s awesome stuff. Extremely durable, 100% waterproof, made in the USA, and it looks awesome. Secondly… being that these are pouches to be added to your existing packs, we thought it would be a great way to “match” them with previous collaborations and/or your other favorite non-collaboration carry. It just seemed to fit all around, like two perfectly cut puzzle pieces. For this collection, we opted for X-Pac VX42, a three-layer sandwich with a great balance of toughness, flexibility, and low weight for small items (like pouches).

Interior Pop

While we had our friends Dimension Polyant on the horn, we explored some exciting new liner fabrics for the pouches. Sure, an orange liner is usually our thing, but our jaws dropped once we started playing with DP’s PX05 fabric. It’s totally clear, allowing the white/gray backing of the VX42 to “shine through” for visual contrast and serious X-factor. For strength and durability, they added black polyester X grid (for strength and a nice visual pop) as well as a square grid of white polyester for ripstop properties (and additional strength).

Rainproof

Both the exterior fabric (VX42) and the interior fabric (PX05) are waterproof, so we needed to round out the protective shell with some YKK AquaGuard zippers. These are the semi-matte finish, no full matte, not glossy, just right. All exterior zippers utilize this zipper, with YKK reverse coils on the interior. But in the rare circumstance that you submerge your pouches, there’s also one water drain grommet at the bottom of the two admin-style pouches (CE09 and CE10).

Customize Your Pullers

Of course we went with a black exterior fabric on this collection, including black paracord with 3M flecks for visibility at night… but there’s an extra bonus included with CE08, CE09, and CE10 (CE07 doesn’t have zippers). Included in each pouch, there’s a little envelope with a full set of pre-cut zipper puller cords in orange w/3M flecks and olive green w/3M flecks. Now you can personalize your entire kit or individual pouches as you see fit.

Hardware Upgrade

Sure, the standard closure method on the SPX is secure and works well, but we had to add a little extra fun to the mix. We’re big fans of the brand, you’re big fans of the brand, everyone loves Fidlock. Magnets, one-handed operation, they look fantastic, and they give that satisfying *clack* when you close them. Specifically, we chose the Magnetic V-Buckle with a solid metal face for durability.

Organizer Upgrade

We really love PDW’s admin pouches, but to save a little weight (and cost to you), rather than purchasing a Velcro-backed organizer panel, we included it sewn into the pouch itself. Everything you need, without adding, removing, and/or paying for inserts.

If you’ve hung around here long enough, and spent any time with any of the Carryology crew at any of the events, you’ll know that there is one subject we all agree on and all love equally: merino wool. It’s common to see the Carryology team all decked out in their merino tees, comparing which is their favorite and why. Today, we’re looking at the best merino wool t-shirts for men.

What is merino wool?

Merino wool is grown only on Merino Sheep, almost exclusively in Australia (81% of the world’s ultrafine wool!) and New Zealand. Each sheep can produce up to five pounds of wool a year!

Why is it so good?

Where to begin? Versatility is arguably merino wool’s key strength. It naturally regulates temperature, meaning that you can use merino wool year-round. It’ll help keep you warm in the winter, and cooler in the summer. The natural crimps in the fiber trap heat in the winter and then act as a wicking aid in the summer. It is also antimicrobial, meaning it can go longer without washing, and thanks to the natural amino acids found in merino wool, it is odor resistant. Crucially, it is thinner and softer than traditional wool, meaning it has exceptional comfort next to skin. Being a natural material that is sustainably farmed and is biodegradable, it has a significantly lower environmental impact too. In fact, merino wool will usually biodegrade or compost after 12 to 18 months!

What to look out for

Just like winter down jackets, there are varying types of merino wool garments, particularly t-shirts. The biggest differentiation in merino wool is the micron, or diameter, of the wool. This micron measurement (one micron is equal to one-millionth of a meter and fiber length is recorded in millimeters) will help a manufacturer decide what to purchase and what to use the wool for.

Merino wool

For reference, the average micron of human hair is between 50 to 100 microns. Merino wool is less than 22 microns–this gives you a clue as to just how soft it is. We’re most likely to see fine micron merino wool in t-shirts, as opposed to medium and broad. This means they’ll have a micron of between 17 to 24, which you’ll often see in product descriptions. The lower the number, the softer or more “lightweight” a wool will be. The higher the number, it’s likely thicker and heavier for a sweater or similar.

Merino wool tees are more expensive than your standard cotton or polyester t-shirt, but one merino wool t-shirt can replace many in your wardrobe and your suitcase.

We’ve spent the last 18 months testing out merino tees all over the world, and these are the best we’ve found!

Let’s dive into the best merino wool t-shirts for men.

Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee (US$78)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee

As the name suggests, this t-shirt is designed to keep you fresh even after three days in of constant wear. Made with 87% 16.5-micron merino wool from New Zealand and 13% nylon, you get all of merino’s great benefits paired with added durability from the nylon, meaning this tee will wash and wear well for many adventures to come. Great for travel, as a base layer, or simply an everyday tee, the Proof 72-Hour Merino Tee also comes in a wide choice of colorways so you can dial in your preferred styling. Taylor and I have travelled in these, we’ve slept in them, and we’ve partied in them. The proof fit is stylish but not restrictive and they’re one of the best all-rounders I’ve tested. You can also get the 72 hour tee in long sleeve, henley, and polo styles.

Unbound Merino Wool Crew Neck T-Shirt (US$85)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Unbound Merino Wool Crew Neck T-Shirt

The classic fit and range of colorways make the Unbound Merino Wool Crew Neck T-Shirt a savvy and sustainable choice for any wardrobe. The wool is Woolmark® and RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) certified and sustainably sourced from Australia. Made with a 17.5-micron 100% merino wool jersey using WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certified production, it’s a great wrinkle-resistant piece for travel that will help keep your packing and laundry requirements to a minimum. But it’s just as easy to wear every day, under a work shirt for a little added warmth, or while kicking back on the weekend. These crews are what we wore in New Zealand, they’re a little heavier than others on this list, but in a really good way. They feel robust, and they break in really nicely. We even wore our unbound merino crews when caving through glacial run off (yes, it was cold!) and within 10 minutes of leaving our underground lair, we were warm and dry again. You can also grab this tee in a V-neck version!

Mission Workshop Sector : MC (US$85)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Mission Workshop Sector : MC

Mission Workshop’s Sector : MC ticks all the boxes you want out of a tee. Soft against the skin, durable enough for active use, and understated enough to move seamlessly from your local cafe to the hiking trails. The fabric uses 18.9-micron 190g/sm Australian merino wool with a nylon core, so you get odor resistance, moisture wicking, temperature regulation, and durability in one. Made in New York City, the tee comes in a choice of four colorways so you can add a bold pop to your wardrobe or keep things sleek and low-key depending on your personal tastes. Mission Workshop just nail it when it comes to style, it looks good, you feel good wearing it, and it pulls double duty with ease.

Outlier Dreamweight Raw Cut Shortsleeve (US $88)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Outlier Dreamweight Raw Cut Shortsleeve

The folks at Outlier have spent years developing their expertise in fabrics and honed urban styling and it shows with pieces such as the Dreamweight Raw Cut Shortsleeve. The blend of 75% 16.5-micron merino wool and 25% nylon gives this tee the performance features of merino with the durability you want to confidently explore, not worrying about how your gear is going to hold up. Available in a choice of colorways that provide various UPF protection ratings, the t-shirt also features raw-cut edges at the sleeves, hem, and collar to reduce weight even further for added comfort on the go. When I first got my hands on this tee, I was astonished at how light it is. Perfect for warmer days as a standalone tee, it’s positively airy. The low slung neck is very comfortable, and it oozes effortless style, as you would expect from the Brooklyn based brand.

Ibex Men’s 24 Hour Short Sleeve Crew (US$88)

Ibex Men’s 24 Hour Short Sleeve Crew

If you’re all about merino with a savvy technical touch, check out the Ibex Men’s 24 Hour Short Sleeve Crew. It features MECool fabric, which is 100% merino with a performance finish. A proprietary steaming process makes the fabric feel cooler to the touch, so it can adapt to a wider range of climates. The tee provides a regular fit with no tags to enhance wearer comfort and the curved hem comes in handy for tucking into pants or jeans. Plus with a range of colorways to choose from, you’re solid on the style here too. I find Ibex tee’s to land in the sweet spot fit wise, they were fitted, but not skin tight. I like to have a bit of give in my clothing from the cut first and the fabric second, particularly when being active. This tee will take on challenge after challenge.

KUIU ULTRA Merino 120 LT LS Crew-T (US$89)

KUIU ULTRA Merino 120 LT LS Crew-T

KUIU have a reputation for tough and functional gear that will perform in the outdoors day in and day out. And there only strengthens this reputation. The long-sleeve shirt features Nuyarn Merino using a blend of 17.5-micron merino wool (70%) around a durable nylon core (30%). This creates a 120 g/m² fabric that’s lightweight but durable enough for demanding outdoor pursuits. The shirt has flat lock seams for increased comfort and also offers 50+ UPF sun protection. And with a range of colorways to choose from including camo prints, this is a versatile option for hunting, hiking, or as a base layer in colder weather. This has become my go-to “comfort” merino tee. It feels like it can take on anything you throw at it, while maintain gin and understated aesthetic. It has an awesome comfort factor and feels great next to your skin, whether wearing it as part of a layering system or on its own. If you’re a hunter, it comes in a range of camouflage patterns too, depending on your needs!

Ibex Men’s Merino Tencel Long Sleeve Tee (US$95)

Ibex Men’s Merino Tencel Long Sleeve Tee

The Ibex Men’s Merino Tencel Long Sleeve Tee brings the added warmth and protection of long sleeves to your merino wardrobe, so you’re equally ready for cooler months and combatting the sun in warmer weather. Reinforcements at the neck and side seams help the shirt retain its shape and durability and these are teamed with a relaxed fit and no tags to increase comfort. And with a blend of 45% merino wool, 45% Tencel, and 10% nylon you get a savvy blend of performance features with added durability for living life on the go. I’ve hiked in this and I’ve worn it to dinner, round and round again. The casual styling of this tee fits into any wardrobe, and you’ll wonder how you’ve gone on so long without one.

Western Rise StrongCore Merino Tee (US$98)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Western Rise StrongCore Merino Tee

Western Rise are experts in creating multifunctional apparel that straddles the everyday/travel divide. The StrongCore Merino Tee is a fine example of their approach to versatile, quality design. Key to the versatile nature of the tee is the fabric, which features a blend of 82% 18.5-micron top-capped merino wool, 12% nylon, and 6% spandex, offering the travel-friendly features of merino with added durability and four-way stretch. And since its classic style and cozy softness are easy to embrace in a range of day-to-day settings, there’s no reason this won’t become an everyday favorite too.

Mission Workshop Perimeter : Merino Core Nylon Long Sleeve Crew (US$105)

Mission Workshop Perimeter : Merino Core Nylon Long Sleeve Crew

Digging the look and feel of MW’s Sector : MC but want some added warmth? They’ve got you covered with the Perimeter : MC, a long-sleeve alternative to their merino t-shirt. Like the tee, the Perimeter : MC is made in New York City and features an 18.9 micron 190g/sm Australian merino wool with a nylon core, so you merino’s awesome benefits with added durability for everyday, travel, and active use. Whether worn as a base layer under additional items or as a standalone shirt, this is a versatile piece for a range of uses, from hitting the gym to chilling on the weekend or taking in new sights on your travels.

Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut Two T-Shirt (US$120)

Outlier Ultrafine Merino Cut Two T-Shirt

If you’re looking for an extra luxurious touch in your tees, Outlier’s Ultrafine Merino Cut Two T-Shirt delivers. This t-shirt is constructed with Ultrapure Mackenzie Merino Jersey featuring a top-capped, tight spectrum,17.5-micron merino jersey. What does this mean? Well, micron numbers are often an average across a mix of different micron fibers (meaning a lot of the fibers in the material are thicker than the micron rating). Where the Mackenzie Blend differs is the fact that it is top-capped. This means the stated micron number references the maximum thickness that can be included in the blend, not the average. The tight spectrum blend also refers to the very low variance of fiber thicknesses in the material mix, resulting in a more stable fabric with a great hand feel. The t-shirt features a box cut with broad shoulders and a high neck and comes in a variety of colorways too.

Alchemy Equipment AEM166 180GSM MERINO V TEE (US$82)

Best Merino Wool T-Shirts for Men: Alchemy Equipment AEM166 180GSM MERINO V TEE

Clean, comfy, and versatile, this V-neck tee is a grab-and-go staple for everything from morning runs to daily wear and travel adventures. The t-shirt uses 18.5-micron 100% merino wool in its construction, with a variety of low-key colorways that are easy to pair across a range of outfits. Casually classy and luxuriously soft, this tee is a great pick for those seeking quality, comfort, and easy style in one. Alchemy Equipment are one of the best in the game when it comes to crossover clothing, and this stylish shirt is the epitome of their design language. This is arguably the most stylish on our list, and I get compliments whenever I wear mine.

Reigning Champ Merino Jersey Long Sleeve (US$160)

Reigning Champ Merino Jersey Long Sleeve

Low-key casual style, excellent handcrafted quality, and cozy performance are the name of the game with Reigning Champ’s Merino Jersey Long Sleeve. The shirt is made by hand in Canada using a blend of 93% merino wool and 7% elastane. And with thoughtful features such as flatlock seams, semi-raglan sleeves, and underarm and side gussets, this long-sleeve shirt is designed to keep you moving freely and comfortably throughout your day, wherever it might lead. It has become my favourite for travel, and I’ve worn this on multiple long haul flights and gone straight to work when I’ve landed. The heathered look is clean and can go with anything.

When you’re spending more money on clothing, you want to be sure that you’re investment is worthwhile. Merino Wool Tee’s are an easy way to elevate your style, streamline your travel, and carry better.

You asked for it. And we listened. We now have patches that will restock for the foreseeable future. After months of sampling, customs completely losing the prototypes twice, two different embroidery machines, and three different trial and error processes… we’re very happy to be launching our brand new morale patches, six in total.

Introducing… the Carryology Classic Collection.

What makes this different than the last several releases of morale patches that sold out in just seconds? We made hundreds upon hundreds of these in the hopes that everyone can score a set… or even two sets if they’d like. And if they do sell out? We’re going to restock them again and again for the foreseeable future. They might eventually be replaced and/or updated someday. But for the meantime, these will be readily available, restocking as necessary. If they happen to be sold out, a new batch should be coming in just a couple weeks!

We kept these patches ultra simple and minimal, while still having some fun with manufacturing. The overall design was inspired by baseball hats and their iconic “3D” raised embroidery. We actually had to use 2 different embroidery machines, with dozens of prototype trials to get the 3D effect we wanted. It was a fine balance between the 3D height while maintaining detail and precision, but we’re stoked with the way they turned out.

Putting it simply, these are raised embroidered thread on a 2”x3” panel, with Velcro on the backside, and two of them glow in the dark.
